Kindy Karate Class - 2006 |
The Miranda RSL Youth Club, Karate Activity, was founded in 1977 by the current Resident Instructor, Sensei Brian Cox - Seventh Dan S.K.I.F. At the time, Sensei Cox was a training Shodan and had been teaching for about 12 months. The then Chief Instructor, of the Shotokan Karate Association of Australia, Sensei Frank Nowak - Sixth Dan S.K.I.F., paid regular visits to the Dojo until 1987. Since 1987, the Karate Activity has been under the exclusive direction of Sensei Cox and has enjoyed the full support of the Miranda RSL Club, Sub-branch and Youth Club. The Karate Activity has exclusive use of the Karate Room, at the Youth Club, and has been provided with a full size Jigsaw Championship Mat, half of which is permanently laid down on the Dojo Floor. There are Special Classes, for children under the age of 11 years, and the Padded Jigsaw Mats are particularly good for the running of these classes, with the children being able to fall to the floor with a much lower risk of injury. Whilst the main emphasis at the Club is Karate-do training and development, many of the Members have had good championship results over the years, in both Shotokan Karate International and Australian Karate Federation Championships. Sensei Cox himself, had an extensive Championship career prior to 1987, culminating with him being a Member of the Australian Karate Federation National Team for the 1986 WUKO 8 World Championships. Training Sessions, have been
structured around particular Grade and Age groups. This
enables Sensei Cox to target much of the training
towards the particular needs of the Students in his care.
The very young children can train in an environment that
is particularly targeted towards their lack of co-ordination
and concentration skills. The teenage beginner, or mature
adult beginner can train in a class where the highest
grade is a Purple Belt. Although it still takes a while
to get the hang of things, the training exercises are not
too far beyond a raw beginner. Brown and Black Belt
training, on the other hand, is! Training times are as follows: TUESDAY NIGHT 5pm to 6pm Junior Beginner's Karate - 6 years to 10 years of age. Entry level sessions, for Juniors who have not yet started doing gradings within the Shotokan Karate International Grading System. 6pm to 7.30pm General Training for all grades - 11 years of age and over. This session is also open to Junior members who have started grading within the Shotokan Karate International Grading System. THURSDAY NIGHT 5pm to 6pm Junior Beginner's Karate - 6 years to 10 years of age. Entry level sessions, for Juniors who have not yet started doing gradings within the Shotokan Karate International Grading System. 6pm to 7.30pm General Training for all grades - 11 years of age and over.
