Shotokan is the world’s best-known style of Karate and derives its name from the pen name of its founder Gichin Funakoshi. This style of Karate is notable for its effective use of attacks and blocks at far maai, meaning distance is maintained between opponents.
However, Karate training is about more than just self-defence. At Miranda RSL Youth Club, the main emphasis of training is on Karate-do, a form of training that focuses on the development of character and strength in mind, body and spirit through physical training. This type of training teaches self-discipline, determination and self-confidence, important skills that will last a lifetime and remain valuable far outside the walls of the Dojo.
The Miranda RSL Youth Club Karate Activity was founded in 1978 by the current Resident Instructor, Sensei Brian Cox – Eighth Dan S.K.I.F (Shotokan Karate International Federation). The Karate Activity has exclusive use of the Karate Room and has been provided with a full size Jigsaw Championship Mat, half of which is permanently laid down on the Dojo Floor.
Training Sessions at the club are structured around Grade and Age groups enabling Sensei Cox to target training to the individual needs of the students in his care.
Whilst the main emphasis at the Club is Karate-do training and development, throughout the years, members have also achieved success at a number of competitive events such as the Shotokan Karate International and Australian Karate Federation Championships.
Shotokan Karate is a great way to get fit and have fun whilst learning self-defence and self-discipline.
